Ways to Sell a Horse

Other Options to Consider - Training Instead of Selling

Many times horse owners, especially amateurs, become frustrated with their horses because they either won’t do what their asked or they buck, shy or misbehave in many other ways. Seldom is it because a horse wants to be bad, most likely it is a communication problem between the Horse and Rider or a physical problem causing the horse pain.

Many problems that seem overwhelming to the horse owner can be fixed with the help of a good trainer. A competent trainer will first ask if all possible physical problems such as teeth that need floating, a sore back or poorly fitted saddle have been eliminated. The trainer will then listen to the horse owner describe the bad behavior before he rides the horse to evaluate where the problems may be coming from. There may or may not be a charge for this evaluation and recommendation.

If the problems stem from a training issue or the rider’s lack of expertise a trainer can often fix the problems with retraining and rider education. The trainer should provide a description of what he intends to accomplish, how long it will take and how much it will cost. The owner can then decide if the investment in training is worthwhile compared to the cost of selling the horse and looking for a new one.

A good trainer can also evaluate whether the Horse and Rider are a good match. If the owner decides the horse is not suited to the job he is supposed to do the trainer can often assist in the selling or trading process and help the owner find a more appropriate match.
